WILLEN HOSPICE RECEIVES GRANT TO INCREASE THEIR VOLUMETRIC INFUSION CAPABILITY.
Friday, April 16, 2010, 09:15

A regular volunteer at Willen Hospice, Chevalier Donald Maclean KLJ, OMLJ, has donated £2,880 through the Saint Lazarus Hospice Association for an automatic volumetric infusion pump. Valerie Soper wrote: “At Willen Hospice we often have patients requiring infusions for symptom control of their conditions. These may be blood transfusions to ease the symptoms of breathlessness and tiredness associated with anaemia, transfusions of medications to help with alleviating the symptoms of high calcium associated with bone secondaries and  fluids to improve condition if a patient is dehydrated.

It is vital to use a pump for delivering infusions as the rate of infusion has to be carefully monitored especially in patients who are very ill. It also ensures that infusions run accurately to time without nurses having to closely monitor them at all times.

At present we only have 2 pumps and with 20 patients, it can mean a delay in giving infusions to patients. They are expensive for us to buy especially  as Willen Hospice is a Charitable organisation and relies on donations and fundraising for over 75% of its funding. Having one bought for us will benefit our patients greatly.”
