ARCHANGEL MICHAEL HOSPICE, PAFOS, CYPRUS

1 April 2015

On Wednesday 3rd December 2014 our Master-General, Frà John Baron von Hoff OStJ GCTS GCLJ GCMLJ SCLJ KV CMV, and Pauline Baroness von Hoff DGCLJ DCMLJ SCLJ, visited Cyprus at the kind invitation of the Commander of the Commandery of Pafos, Confrère Andreas Charalambous CLJ, to attend the Grand Opening of the Archangel Michael Hospice with which our Confrères in Pafos were, and are, very much involved.

The Inauguration and Blessing of the new hospice, which took place on Friday 6th December, was carried out by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Fouad Twal, accompanied by members of the Orthodox and Maronite churches.

The colour of our Order is seen prominently in the main entrance of the hospice and provides a bright and clean image for all current and future visitors.

The architectural design, the choice of colours, the open spaces that surround the patient and public rooms are just superb, and have been arrived at with the wellbeing of those who are going to use the facilities constantly in mind.

The children’s bedrooms are decorated with a great deal of imagination, and the public rooms are spacious and airy.

The staff, the volunteers and the supporters, both ‘ex-pat’ and local, are all brimming over with incredible enthusiasm for this new and ground breaking project; the first ‘purpose built’ hospice in Cyprus.

It is a matter of great satisfaction for our Cypriot confrères that they have been involved with, and partially responsible for, this wonderful project, and the Order congratulates each and every one of them for their dedicated efforts.

In a climate where heat can pose a problem the whole building is beautifully ventilated, and a feeling of cool tranquillity pervades all areas.

On the occasion of the Grand Opening, and on behalf of the members of the Commandery of Pafos, the Commander, Confrère Andreas Charalambous, pledged a further donation of €1,000 to the hospice and, taking this as his cue, the Master-General also promised an additional €1,000 from the UK to be added to the Order’s donations.

The welcome, generosity and kindness shown to the Master-General and the Baroness, by the Commander of Pafos and all his confrères, was second to none, and made the trip both a pleasure and an undeniable success.
